To what extent did I choose an issue that I genuinely care about?
I chose a topic that I am super passionate about. Throughout this Justice Project, I have found out so much about Racial Inequality and Mass incarceration. I get more and more passionate about it as the days go on, and I truly love learning about this. This is one of my callings. I definitely want to talk about it to communities, to inspire and educate them.
How does my proposal align with my own strengths, interests, especially in light of what I’m thinking about doing for my action project for Senior Project?
I really don’t think my proposal aligns with my senior project at all. My senior project is about school shootings and the impact that they have on students educationally and mentally. My Justice Project is fighting for those who can’t fight for themselves. The only way that my two projects relate to each other, is by education. I am educating the public about racial inequality, and I am educating the public, parents, teachers, students, etc. about school shootings, and the fears that students have on a day to day basis.
What did I learn from this process that will help me with my senior project?
I learned a lot about research. I know what things are going to be valuable, what types of sources I learn best from (Videos), and I learned how to manage my time with so much freedom. I also learned how to apply my passions into the papers I write, and how to express those feelings in my papers.
What was the most valuable/informative/interesting part of this assignment?
I think all of it was important. I learned what I want to do for a project, and I learned so many new things that I probably wouldn’t have learned at any other school. Not just this assignment, but this whole unit shaped my entire perspectives about the Criminal Justice System, and I found a lot about myself.
What is one thing I could have done to improve this project the most?
I think that I could’ve found more information about Mass Incarceration, and Racial Inequality. I feel that there is so much information out there, and I was only looking at a tiny bit of it. There are hundreds of videos, articles (scholarly and secondary), and podcasts about the mass incarceration system, and I just wish I had more time to find out more information. I also wish that I applied more philosophies to my studies. Until my cover letter, I didn’t even think about the different philosophies that we learned; utilitarianism, libertarianism, deontology, etc. That gave me a little bit of a setback since I had to go back and think about what my philosophy is, and how it relates to my Justice Project.
